January 13, 2021
Hello Wildcats and Families,

At this point in January, your student should be feeling comfortable and in the swing of things for this semester.  I hope your student has settled into the routine of each synchronous day and managing their time well so that Fridays do not feel overwhelming.

January’s short days and the remote teaching environment can put stress on your students, but please know that we do have many resources available here to support you.  One, in particular, is our partnership with the Jefferson Center, and the services of Dr. Sharon Stremel.  Also, our prevention counselor Kelly Smith, our social workers Lexi Evans and Scarlett Doise as well as all our counseling staff are here to support the educational and emotional needs of our students.  Please reach out, we will do our best to help.

Seniors, in particular, who may have failed classes critical for graduation this spring should reach out to their counselor to establish a plan and investigate our credit recovery options.  There are several roads that all lead to GRADUATION so please make sure you are taking advantage of every opportunity to make that a reality.  Wildcats, you CAN do this!

And for our underclassmen, it is ALREADY time to explore your options for classes for next year!  Please see the information below about counseling’s program on getting started on registration for next year.  It has great information that will help you through the process.

Juniors, SAT testing is on the horizon too.  Please take advantage of the practice test offering coming later this month -- it will give you good experience and confidence for the SAT later this spring.

Parents and students, we also have links included for your student for the district’s Make Your Voice Heard Survey.  MYVH is a survey designed to promote engagement in school, improves the school learning environment, and combats problems such as bullying.  Arvada West High School will be giving students the survey in January-February 2021. This annual survey gives us great feedback on Arvada West.  Your student’s input is welcomed, please have your student follow the directions below and participate in MYVH today.

And enjoy the upcoming three day weekend!  Please note the schedule change below.

As we continue to navigate the school semester, our Wildcat resilience and strength will continue to be important skills to hold close.  Keep your focus.  Don’t put off that homework - homework strengthens your skillset by “practicing” your learning.  Keep practicing.  Keep asking questions.  Keep reaching out to your teachers, to your counselors, and to your administrators.  And most importantly, keep your positive Wildcat attitude.  #WildcatStrong.  Spring semester 2021.  You got this.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Geree Santarelli

Principal

Counselors have been working hard over the last week, reaching out to Seniors and Juniors in need of credit recovery.  This credit recovery option is during the school day and at no charge to the student.  If your student has received this information, please make sure the contract has been completed and returned to the counselor as soon as possible.  As students finish the classes more credit recovery spots will be opened for underclassmen.

Placement of students is based upon the availability of Credit Recovery courses. Students will be expected to replace one of their off-hours for the Credit Recovery Course. These courses are done through a program called Edgenuity and students will have 6 weeks to complete a Credit Recovery course. Counselors are reaching out directly to students and families to offer these courses, there is no signup required.

Happy New Year Wildcats!

I am hoping this communication finds you rested, relaxed and ready to tackle a new semester. Much has been learned from the previous semesters of remote learning and as a school we are adjusting a few things to help everyone be more successful and engaged in the learning. To be successful we know that it takes all parties, students, parents and the school to ensure a successful experience. If any of these parties do not uphold their end of the educational tripod, it begins to tip and eventually fail. As a school we have created common practice throughout the school on the organization of course content in Schoology, attendance practices and a late work policy. With these new common practices we are hoping for a more consistent experience and accountability for our students. Below you will find more information regarding these common practices.

Although our failure rate for this first semester was 11%, which is 4% higher than normal, we consider the decrease from the first semester’s second six weeks grading period of 21.7%, a success. The consistent efforts of parents, students and teachers working to create opportunities for successful demonstration of proficiency is a testament to the old adage, “it takes a village”. I would encourage all students and parents to continue to monitor grades and attendance and focus on keeping up with the workload in order to achieve the desired outcome.

One thing I think we all know is that procrastination is not our friend and can quickly overwhelm our efforts. I know I have heard many times that Fridays for many of our students can appear overwhelming, as many teachers have their work due at the end of the day. But in many cases what is happening is work that has been assigned all week is being left to Friday to complete leading to that sense of an excessive workload. Teachers will be working with students throughout the semester on more “soft skills”, such as time management, project management and self-advocacy. We believe that these efforts combined with new common practices will increase engagement and success.

Let’s keep a forward focus and make 2021 a much better year than before. A big round of applause to all of our Wildcats who continue to persevere through these unprecedented challenges and make us all Wildcat Proud.

As always if you have questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact us.

December 16, 2020

Dear Wildcats and families,

Thank you so much to all the parents and students who have given such great feedback on your experiences with the first semester and remote learning.  Your comments and suggestions will continue to drive our planning and staff development for next semester.

These unprecedented times have given us a new perspective on student learning and engagement.   Your feedback and partnership continues to be critical as we move forward into 2021.   As we begin next semester, you will see from us a renewed focus on ways to make sure your students are as engaged in remote learning as if they were sitting in their desks at Arvada West.  Public health guidelines will dictate our eventual return to the classroom, but we are committed to do all we can as educators to strengthen our remote processes in order to bring more of the classroom to you.    Students will need to continue to do their part as well by engaging in online learning, working to connect with their teachers and classmates, and staying positive.

As we move into our break, I highly encourage all my students, staff and parents to take a much needed break from screen time.  Unplug this season and give yourselves a respite from the screen.  Let’s enjoy the company of family and friends, spend time outdoors, play a board or card game and eat lots of good food.  We will soon be back into the grind of the new semester so take some time to enjoy the season and recharge your batteries.

Remember to finish #WildcatStrong!  YOU GOT THIS!!

December 9, 2020

Dear Wildcats and Families,

We know this has been a hard year for all of us.  We are sooo close to having this year behind us, and things look promising for our plans to return to some sense of normalcy next year.

But the fact remains that we still need to finish what we’ve started this year academically.

We all understand that one of the most difficult things about COVID is how remote learning and restricting social interaction has weighed so heavily on our students, families and our staff.  Shifting between in and out of classrooms, going fully remote, and suspending many of our school traditions has been so demotivating to our students-and right now that is reflected in student grades as an abundance of failing grades.

The staff at AWest has come up with a plan that we hope will give all our students an opportunity to “show what you know”.

For the week of December 14-18 Arvada West will hold this time as “proficiency week”.   Classes will continue, students should still be attending all remote classes.  This means that this week we will be focusing on students completing back assignments and working on ways to demonstrate their level of understanding of the material. Teachers will be working on allowing students to show proficiency in a variety of manners.  This does not mean it is a finals week, and the only way to assess a student’s level of understanding is through a test.  Failing students should have a chance to demonstrate their level of understanding in a variety of ways, per teacher discretion or complete necessary work to attain a passing grade.  This is still a Monday-Thursday synchronous/Friday asynchronous week.  With a focus on getting students to demonstrate a passing level of proficiency.

Our teachers know that all our Wildcats CAN and DO know more about their subject matter than is reflected right now in the gradebook.   Students whose level of understanding is not reflected in their grade must make a concerted effort to reach out to their teachers and ask what needs to be done in order to demonstrate proficiency. The main office staff has been contacting students and parents over the last week to encourage them to engage and complete necessary work to pass.

Nothing is beyond hope if you dig deep and give it one last effort, Wildcats.  Proficiency Week is an opportunity to demonstrate your learning.  Let’s get to it and finish strong!  Let’s all feel that Wildcat Pride, for a job well done.

Important Information - NEW -  Proficiency Week

December 14th-18th will become a “proficiency”  week.  This means that this week we will be seeking ways for students to demonstrate their level of understanding. Teachers will be working on allowing students to show proficiency in a variety of manners.  This does not mean it is a finals week, and the only way to assess their level of understanding is through a test.  Failing students should have a chance to demonstrate their level of understanding in a variety of ways, per teacher discretion, or complete necessary work to attain a passing grade.  This is still a Monday-Thursday synchronous/Friday asynchronous week and students should attend all classes as scheduled.  The week will focus on getting students to demonstrate a passing level of proficiency.

Student Engagement teams (admin, counselors, secretaries) will be helping to make phone calls to try and get students in the building or schedule a one-on-one time with the teacher to attain additional support.  The Engagement team is making contacts and encouraging you and your students to contact your teachers to schedule a time to ask for help and find out what can be done to demonstrate proficiency in your class.  Reach out to your counselor with any additional questions or support needs.

Support Days  Friday, Monday, and Tuesday ( December 18th, 21st, 22nd) will be days to support students, gather end of semester feedback from students, and tie up loose ends.  This gives students and teachers another opportunity to get that last bit of extra support to get to passing.  Students are allowed in the building during this time if they make advance appointments with their teachers and if the protocols are followed (small numbers, temp checked through security at main office desk).   Students will be sent a  survey to gather feedback on the semester.

 First Semester Grades

First Semester Grades will be posted on December 22nd at 4:00 pm.  Questions or concerns about grades please reach out to your student’s Counselor or Administrator.

December 2, 2020

Dear Wildcats and Families,

December’s arrival tells us that the end of this unprecedented school semester is almost upon us.  While we have just a few more weeks left in the semester, there is much that can be accomplished!

One of the most outstanding skills we are all learning this year is the importance of trying new things.  It is time for that skill once again.  As we near the end of the semester, it is time to try harder - it is time to try a different way of reaching out -- it is time to dig deep and make this semester count.

Our staff is working hard to reach each and every student who needs extra help with new strategies and additional supports during these last few weeks so that every student can succeed. Over the remaining weeks, AWest staff will be working hard to get students extra help and look at evaluating core competencies in new ways.   There is still time for most students to raise their grades to passing levels through hard work and Wildcat persistence. In the next few weeks, we will be reaching out with more specifics -- when those opportunities are presented, students, make sure you do your best to meet those deadlines.

For those of you who already are demonstrating that Wildcat Perseverance --your hard work is still needed to finish the semester off well.  Keep it up!

Let’s end 2020 in Wildcat style -- a strong finish and a bright start to 2021 can be yours, Wildcats.  You CAN do it - you are #Wildcat Strong!

November 18, 2020

Dear Wildcats and Families,

I cannot express how proud I am of our Wildcats through this pivot to Remote Learning!  Everyone has risen to the task once again!  Continuing to work through any obstacle is going to be the legacy of the class of 2020.  The Wildcat work ethic is alive and well and so evident in the number of students who made the honor roll for the second six weeks.  Congratulations to all of you for keeping your focus on your academics.  Perseverance and grit will take you far in life.

For Wildcats who may need additional support, this last stretch to the end of the semester WILL bring you success if you work hard at it.  And if you need help, reach out!  Our staff is ready to help.  There is more information below about a new program that Ms. Evans and Ms. Smith created  to help you during this remote time.  Please take advantage of this opportunity.  Additionally, reach out - your teachers, your counselors, your administrators want you to succeed and are here to help you along the way.  I know you can do this, Wildcats, so stay strong and focused.

It brings joy to my heart to still be able to look forward to our traditions of wonderful performances in fine arts.  Kudos to the Theatre department for their virtual play (The Dining Room) held earlier in the week, and I am looking forward to the virtual Choir Concert tomorrow!

A much-needed break for all of us is coming next week.  With Thanksgiving upon us, I am so thankful for each and every one of our Wildcats.  You make me proud with your resilience and your willingness to adapt to whatever situations may come your way.  The Arvada West staff and I wish each of you a restful Thanksgiving break.  Remember, wear your mask, wash your hands, eat all kinds of good food and we will come out of this pandemic stronger and wiser and make ourselves Wildcat Proud!

Happy Thanksgiving,

Mrs. Geree Santarelli

Have a Wonderful Thanksgiving Holiday, Wildcats!

November 11, 2020
Dear Wildcats and families,

The last week at our school has been a challenge with numerous quarantines of staff and students.  As you are aware the numbers in Jefferson County continue to rise and we are definitely seeing that trend in our high schools. On November 4th, the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment alerted Jefferson County Public Health (JCPH) that effective November 9 at 5 p.m. they had moved Jefferson County to a Level Orange (Level 3). Given the uptick in cases and more restrictive quarantine procedures It has become increasingly more difficult to cover classes with the limited number of substitutes available.

In the event that Jefferson County Board of Education moves us into a fully remote learning model, I want to assure you that Arvada West is ready for this pivot.  Synchronous remote learning has been taking place all year when students are not present in person classes.  Below you will find our 100%  Remote Plan.  Please make sure your child has all the essentials for learning from home exclusively each day they leave our building as we are never sure when a remote day could be called.  This would include instruments and materials for classes. Additionally, now is a good time to make sure your child’s technology is functioning properly and if not seek some support from our Cyber Cats.

I know this is not what many parents want to hear. I truly believe that in-person learning is best for our students overall, but the safety of our students and community may result in Jefferson County School District  moving our schools to a 100% Remote Learning Model.  We will continue to update you on all relevant information as soon as it  becomes available.

I also ask every family to kindly complete the survey below to indicate their learning preference for the spring semester.  We are trying hard to get schedules put together for students prior to winter break, so the sooner you complete the survey the better .  This will allow us to build your child’s schedule.  As always, if you have questions  please do not hesitate to reach out to the school.

November 4, 2020

Dear Wildcats and Families,

As you heard from the district yesterday regarding our most recent news regarding Covid cases, I am again asking parents and students to be diligent in helping to curb the rising numbers by following the safety protocols to ensure we can keep schools open.  I, as I’m sure many of you, feel the best place for our students to learn is in school where they are afforded the opportunities to connect with their teacher and peers so I implore you to wear your mask, wash your hands, and stay home if you are feeling sick.  Unfortunately we have had several instances where students do not want to miss a class, activity or sport and have chosen to come to school sick which unfortunately has resulted in group quarantines.  Please do your part, as we are all in this together.

In terms of doing their part, kudos to our National Honor Society for the Trick-or Treat Street they put on outside for our community.  It was a fun-filled event and so appreciated by parents and young students.  For many this was their only trick-or-treating experience for the year.  Additionally, Student Government has done an amazing job of sponsoring the three week homecoming.  Our Seniors wore their togas, our staff and students competed in a Halloween costume contest, and next week we will recognize and support our Veterans on November 11th.  All of these events are important to our school and community and I cannot be prouder of the efforts to create some semblance of normalcy for our school.  If you can support the efforts of these groups during the annual food drive or Cell Phone for Soldiers drive, please feel free to drop those items off at school or send them with your student during the next few weeks.

Thank you for all your support of our students and staff during these difficult times.  As always if you have questions or concerns, please contact the school.
