Dear Wildcats and Families,

We are well into our second week of hybrid learning and things seem to be settling down for students and staff.  Although there have been technology issues, most of it related to the new wall created by district IT to keep students safe, classes are running well and students are engaging in their learning.  If you or your student continues to have issues with technology, please reach out to the school to troubleshoot the issues.  Many times, it is a simple tweak or some teaching to students about measures to go about getting into zoom, schoology or google chats.

A reminder to students and parents that if a student has an off block and must be in the building we have provided two options for these students: they may attend quiet study time in the library or seek to add another class to fill their schedule.  Please reach out to a counselor if you would like to try and add a class.  Unfortunately, due to Covid restrictions students cannot gather in any of the commons areas in the building.

Next week we will have an adjusted schedule for all students, remote or hybrid, due to the SAT testing for all of our current Seniors that missed SAT testing in the spring.  Classes on Monday and Tuesday will remain the same but Wednesday will be the asynchronous day of the week instead of Friday and then on Thursday and Friday our M-Z hybrid students will come into the building for class.  Please see below for further details about the schedule.

Looking forward, in two weeks students will be receiving their six-week grade report, followed by conferences.  Conferences, like everything this year, will look different. All conferences will be by appointment only and will be via either zoom, google chat or telephone.  We will be sending more information regarding how to sign up for a teacher conference in the next few weeks.

Exciting news arrived last week as five of our Seniors have been named National Merit Semifinalists.  This is an amazing accomplishment as they competed with over 1.6 million students who entered the competition.  Please see below the official announcement from The National Merit Scholarship Program.  So proud of these Wildcats!

National Merit Semifinalists Announcement

The National Merit® Scholarship Program is an academic competition for recognition and scholarships. Approximately 1.6 million high school students enter the program each year. Of the 1.6 million entrants, some 50,000 with the highest PSAT/NMSQT® Selection Index qualify for recognition in the National Merit® Scholarship Program. More than two-thirds (about 34,000) of the approximately 50,000 high scorers on the PSAT/NMSQT® receive Letters of Commendation in recognition of their outstanding academic promise. In early September, about 16,000 students, or approximately one-third of the 50,000 high scorers, are notified that they have qualified as Semifinalists. Semifinalists are the highest scoring entrants in each state.

This year, Arvada West High School is proud to recognize five students this year as National Merit Scholarship Program Semifinalist; Jacqueline Pankratz, Nathaniel Pott, Camille Redford, Delaney Schiffbauer and  Mark Worden.  Good luck, Wildcats, as you continue your journey towards becoming one of the 7,600 finalist who are awarded National Merit Scholarships!

Remote Learning – Supply Pick-Up

This Friday, September 18th  from 10:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. students attending Arvada West in full remote learning will be able to pick up supplies needed for class.  This pickup will be held in the south parking lot.  The following departments will be issuing materials:

·         World Languages

·         Art

·         Science – Honors Biology, Anatomy and Physics, and AP Chemistry.

If you have questions regarding material pickup, please contact your teacher for more information.

Mr. Mulvaney (Brad.Mulvaney@jeffco.k12.co.us)

Schedule Adjustments

Requests for schedule adjustments to move to the hybrid or remote learning systems has ended, as of September 11th.  These changes have a huge effect on the class sizes and health concerns for our students and classes both in and outside of the building.  The Counseling department is still processing these schedule requests and making changes to schedules to accommodate all of our students.  These adjustments may have an impact on your student’s schedule, so please have your student review their schedule over the next few days. If there is a schedule change, we will reach out to the student/parent to alert you to these changes.  We understand that these changes may be difficult so we are trying to minimize these adjustments as much as possible.

Mr. Collins (Shawn.Collins@jeffco.k12.co.us)

Advisement Update and Reminders

As a reminder for parents and students that the asynchronous Advisement class needs to be completed each day, Monday- Thursday.  This is a graded class and can affect eligibility and GPAs.  Each week there is valuable info for students specific to their grade level.  Please make sure you are completing the tasks assigned in the Advisement class daily.

 Dear Wildcats and Families,

Wow, it is amazing to see students in our building and we are so grateful.  Our first two days of hybrid learning are under our belts and even with a few snafus, everything ran relatively well.  Technology still seems to create a few issues for our teachers and students, but the influx on Tuesday of students across the nation created slowness in Schoology, Google classroom and other systems.  Today things ran more smoothly and hopefully we are on the right track.  A gentle reminder to all students and families that we are synchronously learning, so in order to be counted present in classes students must log in and be in the class remotely when the daily instruction is given for all students during the remote period and for hybrid students in the class in the building on time.  Students will begin to be marked absent when they are not logged in with the camera on or in the building during hybrid days during instructional time.  Also our schedule has changed a bit to accommodate the new Covid requirements therefore our 1st and 2nd period classes begin at 7:45 a.m.  Fully remote students will follow the Arvada West Schedule daily.

Below you will find the information pertinent to the coming weeks of school.  As always if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact the school.

Mrs. Geree Santarelli

Principal

Reminders this week include:

  1. Entering the Building
  2. Attendance requirements
  3. Breakfast and lunches
  4. Schoology issues - Email your teachers!
  5. School pictures
  6. Testing Schedule
  7. Arvada West School Accountability Committee Needs YOU!

1.  Entering the building

Students are asked to enter the building at the door closest to the first class of their day to be temperature checked. This means that students may enter from different wings of the school on different days.  We have two doors in the North Wing, three doors in the West Wing and the Prefunction door.  The main office door is only to be used when a student arrives late to class on the south side of the building.

Mr. Mulvaney (Brad.Mulvaney@jeffco.k12.co.us)

2. Attendance

Student attendance will be taken based on following criteria:

To be counted present, students must

  • be in the classroom in your seat by the time the bell rings on hybrid days
  • be logged in to class on time on synchronous days, meaning the student is in the zoom link or google chat during the teacher presentation of daily learning
  • complete required assignment by 2:45 pm on asynchronous days

Students will be considered tardy if they log in late, or complete the attendance form after 2:45 p.m. without communicating with the teacher.  Parents, please contact the attendance line at 303-982-1280 to report an absence.

3.  Breakfast and lunch

We received the news late last week that the USDA has extended waivers making it possible for all students, across the district, to receive meals at no cost regardless of their free and reduced meal eligibility. Waivers are extended through December 31, 2020.  It is essential that families still complete a Free and Reduced Meal Application.  Free meals apply for all types of learners – in-person, hybrid, and 100% remote.  Parents and Guardians may pick up meals for remote learners beginning on 9/14 - look for more information on pickup soon.  Student accounts will still be used to purchase a la carte items.

Breakfast and Lunch serving times:

  • Breakfast: 7am-9:15am
  • Early leave Lunch: 12pm-12:15pm, for those leaving after 5th or 6th period
  • Lunch: 1:25pm-2pm
  • Remote only meal(s) pick up: 2pm-2:30 pm starts 9/14

Mr. Coons (Casey.Coons@jeffco.k12.co.us)

4.  Schoology Issues - Email your teachers!

Try these tips first, then call the district technology office for support: 303-982-3438. Reminder please use your school issued device, especially on days you are in the building in order for us to best support you.

5.  School Pictures & IDs

If you would like to order any pictures see the following link for more information: Lifetouch Order Information

School IDs are being printed offsite and we are hoping to have them starting on Monday, September 21st.

Mr. Volk (Gordon.volk@jeffco.k12.co.us)

September 2, 2020

Dear Wildcats and Families,

It is hard to imagine we are almost finished with our second week of classes for the semester.  Next week begins our adventure into hybrid learning, and as a school we cannot tell you how excited we are to welcome our Wildcats back into our building.  Students bring a fun and engaging energy into our building and after the first few days of tours it is evident that the students are as excited as we are to be back into the in-person learning environment. In this long newsletter is much information about our protocols and procedures for returning to school.  Please read through the information, and as always ask any questions that you may need additional clarification. A reminder that Friday September 11th is the last day to make a switch between remote-only and hybrid learning for the first semester.

Since we are unable to welcome our families and students with our traditional Wildcat Welcome, which is an open house with food trucks and fellowship, we have included in this communication a Virtual Wildcat Welcome.  Hopefully this will allow everyone to put a face to a name.  It is a  priority of mine to continue to create as many opportunities as possible to build the strong Wildcat Pride that makes this such a special community.

Enjoy this long weekend and we will see many of you on September 8th.  Please remember the week of September 8th is an adjusted schedule week for all students remote-only or hybrid, please see the schedule below.

  • Due to field construction spacing is limited for Arvada West and Warren Tech North students utilizing the Arvada West student parking lot.  Parking space is on  a first come first served basis.

Mr. Mulvaney (Brad.Mulvaney@jeffco.k12.co.us )

8.  Safety Precautions

  • The safety of your student(s) is our number one priority here at Arvada West.  Due to COVID-19 we have implemented several new protocols that will ensure Arvada West is a safe place for your student.
  • We have seven different entry doors that students will enter through, to stagger the number of students entering at the same time.  Students will enter through assigned doors closest to their first assigned class  period of the day.
  • Our hallways are clearly marked to keep traffic moving in a fluid manner.  Students need to follow the signs posted in the hallways.  Three of our stairways allow for two way traffic and five that are clearly marked will be one way traffic only.  In order to keep social distancing students need to keep moving, small groups congregating in the hallway will be asked to separate and to head to class.
  • We ask that students not arrive too early for classes as we will limit entrance to the building and students cannot congregate in any commons areas.  Students will need to leave the building at the end of the synchronous learning time.
  • The classrooms have been cleared of non-essential items, extra desks, chairs, etc. to allow for more space to ensure that social distancing can be maintained.  Desks will be sanitized after each class period and seating will be staggered throughout the day so different desks are used each hour.
  • Students are encouraged to wash their hands thoroughly throughout the day.  Hand sanitizer is provided in each classroom as well as at each entry door for students to use.  Students are to keep their hands to themselves and are not allowed to share any materials with other students.
  • Masks must be worn by students at all times.  If a student does not have a mask, AWHS will provide one for the day, a reminder that a bandana is not considered a face covering.  If social distancing can be maintained in a classroom, students may be able to take a break from the mask for less than 5 minutes, as directed by an adult. Masks are mandatory in the hallways.

Wildcat News August 26, 2020

Hello Wildcats and Families,

The 2020-2021 school year is underway and as the 2020 norm, the first day was not very smooth.  District issues with technology created many issues but the district worked with vendors to resolve the issues and the second day was much smoother.  As was sent out last night, we are finding that students and teachers who log into Schoology before the influx of Jeffco students have fewer issues. Hopefully you can plan to log into your classes a little early to ensure a smoother process.  Please remember that our schedule has been adjusted and the first class of the day begins at 7:45 a.m.   We are working with your district IT department to resolve these issues as this should not be the case.  Additionally the district is working with a few Campus issues regarding passwords and attendance, as a result no autodialers will be going home this week, but attendance will be taken everyday.

I so appreciate our community and the grace you have afforded the school throughout this process, as many of these issues are out of our control. Please continue to reach out to us with any concerns or questions so we can quickly resolve them to get students into a learning mode.

For our Freshmen parents, I want to encourage you to have your students take advantage of our campus tours and Wildcat introduction in order to segue into the hybrid school environment more effectively.  Students will learn about our building, new health and safety protocols and meet other students.  The information regarding the tours is below and will take place next week.

As always, we will keep you as updated as possible in this quickly changing environment.  Thank you for all you do for your students and our school community.

Mrs. Geree Santarelli

Principal

  1. Last Call for Tours!

Next week, August 31st, we will be providing optional student orientations based on the schedule below to allow students the opportunity to access the building, see the new safety protocols and hallway flow. Each tour will consist of 6 students and a tour leader. There are 12 spaces to sign up for each time slot but we will break each time slot into 2 groups of 6 to keep our groups small.

During the optional student orientation, Freshmen students will be provided a tour of the building by an upperclassman. Freshmen, please bring a copy of your schedule!  Other grade levels will receive a tour by a faculty member. During the tour, they can find their classroom and ask questions to their tour leader. Students need to come to the North Lot and enter at door 24, see map: AWest Tour Entrance and Exit Map. Each tour will last about 20 minutes, and we ask parents to wait in the North Parking Lot.

  1.  Health News from our School District Nurse

Hello from the District Nurse!  I am LeAnne Downing and here to help all of you start the school year as well as possible.  Let me tell you a few things you may have already seen in your district emails.

When school starts, please encourage your students to be respectful by wearing masks and distancing. If any student shows any possible symptoms of Covid, (sore-throat, sniffles, cough, fever), do not send them to school. Call the school and I will assist you in determining the next steps. If the symptoms are caused by allergies or other non-Covid maladies, we will figure that out. If it is determined it could possibly be Covid, we will request a test. If you choose not to have your student tested, we will request a 14 day quarantine.  Should your students exhibit those symptoms at school, they will be sent home until this process can be completed.  I know this is a pain but we will get through this!

If you have questions you may email me at leanne.downing@jeffco.k12.co.us.

Thank you for your good attitudes during this tough time.  Remember to get your flu shot this season!

Jeffco District Area Nurse  Leanne.Downing@jeffco.k12.co.us

This information can also be found on the AWest Yearbook website under the Student tab on the AWest website.

Wildcat News August 19, 2020

August 19, 2020

Hello Wildcats and Families,

Welcome to the 2020-2021 school year.  On Monday, August 24th, 2020 we kick off of the school year, in a new and unique manner, remote environment for all students.  I look forward to the start of the year and hopefully a return to some normalcy for our students. This will be a year of flux and change for students but we are committed to providing the best possible learning opportunities for our students given the ever-changing circumstances. Please extend grace to our teachers, administrators and staff as we navigate this new system.  It is definitely different not having students in front of us on the first day of school, but we are a strong community and we will not only survive but thrive during this new normal.  Teachers have been requested to spend some time in the first week of school familiarizing students with the learning platform, the protocols of remote and hybrid learning as well as developing the positive relationships that are so necessary for a good learning environment.  In doing this, grace will be extended to our students as they learn what synchronous and asynchronous learning entails.

As you read through this lengthy newsletter there is much information regarding what you and your student can expect over the next two weeks.  Please pay close attention to the details of this plan, so as to be ready for classes on Monday, August 24th at 7:45 a.m.

Communicated in this newsletter today:

  1. What remote learning will look like for our students these first two weeks?
  2. School schedule
  3. How will students access their classes on Monday?
  4. How will freshmen and new students collect their school technology?
  5. How will students access their first semester schedule?
  6. What students can do if their schedule is not accurate?
  7. Opportunities to access the building before September 8th
  8. What expectations for Advisement?
  9. Student Handbook and Important Dates for all Wildcats
  10. For seniors only - a reminder to sign up for the SAT

We have created a link on our home page for Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ), please refer to this link for more information.  As always if you have questions, after you have looked at the FAQ link, please do not hesitate to contact the administrator in charge of the areas of responsibility.  The administrator’s name will follow each section so you can specifically ask questions and get the most up to date answers.

1. Remote learning for the first two weeks:

During the August 24th-September 4th remote period for all students, students will be learning synchronously on Monday-Thursday by following the new schedule, which is linked below.  Attendance will be taken daily during class periods. Monday through Thursday students are expected to access their Advisement class through Schoology and complete tasks before the end of the day.  There is no Advisement on Friday.

Fridays are an asynchronous day, but teachers may request students log in during their class period for additional help or makeup work. All Friday work will need to be completed by 3:00 p.m. for attendance purposes.

Mrs. Santarelli (Geree.Santarelli@jeffco.k12.co.us)

2.  School Schedule

Linked: Arvada West remote school schedule

As a reminder:

Synchronous = Teachers and students are online at the same time.Teachers provide learning resources and tasks through the schoolwide Learning Management System (LMS) Schoology during set class time. This often includes video conferencing.

Asynchronous = Teachers and students are not online at the same time. Teachers provide learning resources and tasks through Schoology. Students access learning resources and tasks on their own schedule before the end of the academic day.

Mr. Collins (Shawn.Collins@jeffco.k12.co.us)

3.  Accessing classes on Monday, August 24

On Monday, August 24th all students will log into our LMS Schoology to access their classes per their individual schedule.  We have provided a link to our AWest Homepage and a  help sheet that will allow parents and students to access Schoology and gain understanding of the system.  It is imperative that students access Schoology from the AWest homepage or use jeffco.schoology.com. These two methods of logging into the Schoology system will allow students access to the Jeffco Schoology network (Please bookmark).  Googling Schoology will not allow access to the Jeffco network.  Once in Schoology, students will have a one stop shop for all their classes and course work.

After Thursday, August 20th, our Campus schedule will sync with Schoology. We have provided a video link for you and your student to watch on how to log into classes. Please take the opportunity to view the video and log into Schoology, starting August 21st and before Monday to limit disruption to learning.

All AWest students need a school issued chromebook to use.  There are features through our Jeffco chromebooks that personal devices will not have.  For instance, MAP testing and kiosk mode for students to take tests/quizzes for classes.  Here is a link to the Jeffco information about our Tech for Ed program.

https://www.jeffcopublicschools.org/academics/curriculum/technology_in_the_classroom/TechForEd/faqs

Middle-School Loaner device return:  If you were issued a loaner device from your middle school during the spring remote learning period, you must bring that loaner device and charger with you when you pick up your new district issued Chromebook.  We will collect the loaner devices and return them to the previous Middle School as those are the middle school’s property and they will need them for this school year.

Note: this information is for any students who have chosen either of the educational options for this semester (fully remote, or the hybrid option).

A reminder that this is a drive thru pick up, please do not get out of your car.  There is no one allowed in the building on these two days.

6.  Schedule adjustments

Schedules have been created for our 1800+ students to accommodate everyone's needs within our new hybrid learning environment. This year in the interest of Jeffco Public Schools health and safety policies, as well as to effect schedule changes as quickly and efficiently as possible, we are directing all schedule change requests to the attached form. Our counseling team will do all they can to honor requests that meet the criteria outlined in the form; however, please bear in mind that there are health and safety restrictions built into our hybrid schedule that may hinder some schedule change requests.

Please double-check your schedule to ensure all core classes needed for graduation are represented. The chart below outlines what is needed by grade level.

CHART OF CORE CLASSES NEEDED BY GRADE LEVEL

Thank you for your patience and understanding as we enter into this hybrid learning schedule adjustment process!

You may submit a schedule adjustment request by using this form to your Counselor until September 11th at 3:00 p.m. Make sure you see your counselor's name at the top of this form, otherwise your request will not be processed. To help process your request quickly, please use only this form.

Schedule changes will only be made for:

1. A student needs a specific class to graduate or as a prerequisite.

2. The student is in the wrong level class or in a class without the proper prerequisite.

All students at AWest are assigned an Advisement teacher.  This year students will have Advisement, from 1:55 p.m. to 3:00 in an asynchronous learning environment Monday through Thursday.  The purpose of this class is to build a strong community and provide opportunities for students to receive important information regarding school business and learning outside of the regular classroom. Much of this learning will be grade specific. Advisement teachers will check grades weekly with students and may do this in person or in a video conferencing manner.  Students must log in everyday and complete the daily assignment or question before 2:45 p.m.

Let me begin by apologizing for my third communication of the week.  I try very hard not to inundate our community with multiple emails within a week, but yesterday we were asked to send a NEW survey to families to complete by August 7th.  This survey asks families to indicate their preference for either Hybrid learning or 100% Remote learning given the change from the announced ReStart plan in July.  We know that adjustments to the plan may have changed your learning preference.  I have received over 1400 responses as of early today from the previous survey, and I so appreciate our community's responsiveness. If you could please complete the survey again, it helps us as a school to build our schedule and structures in our building.  The quicker I get this information, the sooner my team can get student’s schedules built and distributed to families.

Here is the link to the survey: AWest Restart Survey 7-31

Please complete it even if you completed the district form last month. If we do not get your preference information, we cannot create your child’s class schedule before the start of school.

Again, I would like to clarify the two models of learning:

Hybrid Learning- Students will be in the building two consecutive days of the week, based on an alpha break down.  The other two days they will remotely access their class at the designated class time, via an online platform, and engage in the lesson with the rest of the class.  Fridays will be a remote 8 period day for all students. Hybrid Learning is subject to change based on CDE and Jeffco guidance.   For specific information about the schedule please refer to our ReStart information AWEST web page.

100% Remote learning- Students will be in an on-line platform for the entire semester.  The class structure will be a blend of synchronous and asynchronous learning.  Meaning, students could be asked to attend class at a specific time of day and week.  Please understand that certain electives will not be offered in the 100% remote learning model due to the authenticity of the class.

Again, if you could please complete this form by August 7th. If you cannot complete this form by August 7th, or you have questions, please see the explanation of our hybrid schedule on our website or contact the school at 303-982-1303.

Enjoy your weekend!  As always, we are all in this together – Wildcat Strong.

Regards,

Mrs. Geree Santarelli

Hello Wildcats and Wildcat Families,

I know it has only been two days since my last communication, but we have received a few changes from the district regarding the high school restart plan and I think it is imperative that I provide you with an update on changes and greater clarification on our schedule and learning models. I appreciate your support and flexibility as we navigate these uncharted waters. I will resume weekly communication on Wednesdays starting today.

The Arvada West Administration will be holding a town hall meeting, date and time to be determined, as we are waiting until we get closer to the start date so we can have as much up to date and accurate information as possible.

The latest change is that Jefferson County Public Schools determined all high schools will be remote on Fridays. This means your student will be in person learning two consecutive days each week, the other two days they will be remotely synchronously learning with their classes. On Fridays they will be asynchronous learning with all their classes.

To provide more clarity:

  • Synchronous Learning: Students will learn at the same date/time via a virtual platform. This is an effective method and allows for instant feedback and clarification of covered curriculum.
  • Asynchronous Learning: Students learn at different times and work at their own pace, this is similar to the learning they did March-May.

AWHS will have one Learning Management System (LMS) for delivery of all course curriculum.  Schoology, our LMS, will make it more convenient and streamlined for students and families to access needed materials and information in one place.

AWHS will now have an 8 period block schedule to decrease class sizes and to provide more opportunities for students. Students will be in Group A or B by alphabet (approximately A-L in Group A and M-Z in Group B, this is subject to change based on numbers). Students will not be allowed to change groups due to the guidelines in order to maintain 50% occupancy rate.  We are trying to keep class sizes between 12 and 14 students to maintain 6 feet of social distancing.  If you have not already completed the district family survey for your choice of learning model, please do so as soon as possible as this helps in our planning.

When reviewing the schedule you will see that students will complete all four blocks per day before they are released for lunch and dismissal from school.  We encourage students to bring a light snack, if needed, to make it to the lunch period and dismissal. Please avoid nuts and peanut butter items due to allergies.
