Teacher Biography:


Craig Melhorn has been the Director of Instrumental Music at Arvada West High School since 2007. Under his direction, The Instrumental Music program has grown to over 200 musicians, added 2 orchestras, a second jazz ensemble, and Survey of Rock class. In 2011 the Chamber Orchestra performed at CMEA, Wind Ensemble has been made the CBA State Concert Band Finals, Jazz Ensemble I has earned Superior Rating at Jazz Ensembles, Pit Orchestra received the Bobby G Award for the Best Pit Orchestra (Les Miserable). The Instrumental Music Program has also traveled and performed in Seattle (2017), Italy (2015), New York (Carnegie Hall) (2013), San Diego (2011), and Florida (2009). 

Previously, Mr. Melhorn was the Director of Bands at Burnsville High School (MN) and Farmington Public Schools (MN). Mr. Melhorn received his Master of Music degree in Wind Band Conducting, from Minnesota State University, Mankato, and Bachelor of Music Education from the University of Minnesota – Twin Cities.  Mr. Melhorn has studied conducting with Amy Roisum-Foley, Craig Kirchoff, and Jerry Luckhardt, and clinics with Mallory Thompson, H. Robert Reynolds, Allen McMurray, Jerry Junkin, and Donald McKinney. Mr. Melhorn has been apart of commissioning projects by composers Michael Colgrass, Travis Cross, Adam Gorb, Peter Hamlin, Carter Pan, Steven Bryant, and Johann De Miej.
