Chemistry Syllabus

Welcome to Chemistry!

Chemistry is a college “prep” class that is designed for students who plan on attending a 4 year university and earning a Bachelor’s Degree. Topics covered in this class include:

  • 1st Semester:  Atomic Theory, Chemical Bonding, Chemical Reactions
  • 2nd Semester:  Stoichiometry, Gas Laws, Movement and Transfer of Energy, Acids and bases and Equilibrium
  • In addition to Chemistry Content we will focus on building skills around data collection and analysis.

Materials:

To successfully complete this course you will need to bring to class each day:

  • a spiral notebook for notes and a folder just for chemistry
  • a scientific calculator
  • the lab manual (handed out in class)

You may also want to have colored pencils, pens, pencils, highlighters, etc, available.

Classroom Guidelines:

    • I expect each student to follow the safety procedure as outlined in the Jefferson County Safety Contract.  If you become a hazard, you will not be able to complete the lab and an alternative assignment will be provided.  You will be dismissed from the classroom to complete the assignment.
    • All work will have an assigned due date.  Any work that is turned in past the due date up until the test date will need to be accompanied by an explanation.  No work will be given points if it is turned in past the unit test over that material.
    • Cell phones must remain out of sight in class.
    • Respect is crucial to the classroom being a welcoming, caring, safe place for everyone to learn.  Disrespect in any area is not tolerated.

Tests and Quizzes

    • Quizzes will be given often to help assess student progress.  Students can use Office Hours to re-take quizzes.  Students who have achieved a 70% or higher on all of their quizzes for a unit are allowed to use one page of self-created notes on the unit tests.
    • One test is given per unit.  Tests make up about 40% of the total points for the class.
